This Same-Sex Couple Had a ‘Commitment Ring Ceremony’ to Make Their Relationship Official—And, We're All For It

Dr Surbhi Mitra and Dr Paromita Mukherjee 'put a ring on it', vowing to spend a lifetime together. Read on to learn their heartwarming love story.

'Love knows no gender', and a same-sex couple from Nagpur, Maharashtra, are living proof. In a remarkable feat that attempts to break the shackles of gender and sexual stereotyping, two women doctors hosted an intimate 'commitment ring ceremony' in the city to celebrate their courtship.

Dr Paromita Mukherjee and Dr Surbhi Mitra 'put a ring on it' in the company of their close friends and family and are all set to tie the knot in Goa later this year or at the beginning of next year. Speaking about her journey, Dr Paromita told ANI News, 'My father has known about my sexual orientation since 2013. When I told my mother recently, she was shocked. But, later, she agreed, because she wants me to be happy.' She went on to add, 'We call this relationship a 'lifetime commitment'. We are two wives and don't need a husband. Our dream is to have a home, adopt a baby, and become mothers.'

'There was never any opposition to my sexual orientation from my family. In fact, when I told my parents, they were happy. I'm a psychiatrist and many people talk to me about living a dual life because they couldn't take a stand for themselves. We will file a petition for legal recognition too soon,' revealed Dr Surbhi Mitra.

A love-at-first-sight, the lesbian couple first met at a conference, via a mutual friend. Over time, their bond grew stronger, and before they knew it, friendship had blossomed into love. 'The life of those in the homosexual community is not easy. One must be highly educated and financially stable, with a sound career path, for success in such relationships, which are full of challenges,' one of them said.

Here's a look inside their 150-guest commitment ring ceremony:

As the engagement went viral on the internet—inviting applause from one and all—Anand Chandrani, Human Rights Activist and Founder President of the Sarathi Trust, said that it was heartening to see the lesbian couple coming to the fore with a bold decision.
