New year, new you? Heck yeah. 2022 urges you to change things up—so, if you’ve been on the fence about experimenting with your hair, now is the time to take on the challenge. A basic biatch messy bun and dip-dyed hair just don't cut it anymore; to invite fresh new colours, cuts, and styles to your manner, we spoke with Audrey D’Souza from Lakmé Salon on the hair trends that you need to keep an eye out for this year.
Take notes, beauty girls.
Curtain bangs are here to stay—and blunt ones are in vogue. But, if your temptation to try a fringe comes with an apprehension that you might go too heavy, you'll welcome the wispy-bangs trend with open arms. This 90s-inspired look, bangs with layers around the face, is the perfect way to create more movement and texture.
Edgy Mullet with Bangs
The mullet—be it straight or wavy—has always been a crowd favourite. Layers add volume and texture, although a sleek style would be pleasing to the eye as well. If you’re looking to make a bold statement this year, this one definitely makes the 'cut'.
The Classic Bob
The 1920s go-to haircut, with or without bangs, is making its way back in 2022—especially for those with straight and wavy hair. Leading the charge, the classic chin-length look is all set to make a major comeback this year. "Hairstylists are making a strong case for long bobs that are a tiny bit longer in front. If you have fine hair, this cut will help you achieve a cleaner line," explains D’Souza.
Balayage, which refers to the way a colour is applied rather than the colour itself, isn’t going anywhere just yet. While a basic balayage is so been-there-done-that, let's give the reverse balayage a shot this summer, shall we? "Instead of having your roots darker than the rest of your hair, go for a root colour that is a shade lighter than your natural colour. You could also try a chocolate caramel balayage—the melting hue creates a delicious colour blend," she adds.
Scrounging for a cool, new look, but don't want to go all-out? Consider adding streaks to the front of your hair, popularly known as ‘money piece’. It's a great way to draw attention to your features and freshen up your hair without having to colour your entire mane.
A Pop of Colour
Don’t worry, you don’t have to go full-on colour right away—unless you want to—since bright highlights and coloured tips are in this season. If you want to achieve the perfect sun-kissed look, opt for a light brown hue or warm blonde highlights.
Bouncy blowouts are back in vogue, beauty girls. Styling limp hair with that holistic volume has always been a great way to summon bulkiness and amplify thin strands to make them look fuller—take a cue from JLo.
"Create effortless retro waves by brushing through larger curls. These soft tendrils of hair compliment every face shape and texture," says D’Souza.
We're not done with the loose, messy bun trend just yet. The ultimate trick lies in accessorising your bun the chic way—think foulards, hair barrettes, flowers, headgear, and so on.
From bouncy blowouts to reinventing the 1920s classic bob—bookmark these hair trends that are expected to make it big this year.
